Imagine living in a world that doesn’t have small whiteboards…
My name is Dave and I recently had to undergo quite a traumatic experience. A sort of accumulation of difficult situations to get through, one after the other.
Last Tuesday, I woke up to what seemed like a normal, run-of-the-mill day. I got up at 7 AM just like I always do. I stumbled to the kitchen in a blur to get my absolutely 100% necessary morning cup of coffee, just like always…
The kitchen didn’t seem quite right. At first, I couldn’t put my finger on it. Something was off, but what was it? As the caffeine started to kick in and my cognitive processes finally started to fire, it suddenly hit me.
The small whiteboard on the refrigerator was missing…
Well, that might seem like a small thing to you, but it was a very big thing to me. You see, my wife had written down a grocery list on the whiteboard the night before – and it was my turn to do the shopping.
Anyone who knows my wife knows that it isn’t a wise thing to get on her bad side. Yes, I had a legitimate excuse, but excuses don’t usually carry a lot of weight in my house.
It was time to wake up my 5 year old daughter Michelle. When I walked in to her bedroom, the pinkest room you could possibly imagine, she was already awake and turning her room upside down trying to find something.
When I asked her what she was looking for, she said that she couldn’t find her small special writing whiteboard.
Michelle couldn’t find her small special writing whiteboard…
She’d been practicing her letter writing the night before and had been promised extra pocket money if she wrote every letter of the alphabet neatly and correctly. And there was no way on earth she was going to miss out on that money if she could help it.
I wanted to help her find it, but I needed to take her to school before going to work, so despite her protests, we got in the car and started our daily commute.
When I arrived at work, I went straight to my office to get ready for our weekly brainstorming session that focuses on finding new business.
All new employees receive a small whiteboard at orientation, with the instructions that it needs to be brought to the weekly brainstorming session in order for us to share ideas. The boss is big on teamwork and collaboration.
My small brainstorming whiteboard was not in the place where I usually kept it…
I quickly checked with other employees and their small whiteboards were missing too. Well, as you can imagine, the weekly brainstorm meeting was a lot more subdued than usual.
Employees that were normally quick to share and discuss ideas were now quiet… and the boss WAS NOT HAPPY AT ALL.
Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse, I went to the staffroom to check the staff in and out whiteboard. This small board shows which staff are currently in and out, and if they’re out, what time they’ll be back.
I wanted to see when my supervisor was going to get back to the office, as she’d gone out for an appointment and I needed to ask her a very urgent question.
But…
No staff in and out small white board…
It had vanished into thin air and no one had any idea where it was.
I had to make a guess as to what was the best way forward with my problem and hope it was the right response, and that my supervisor would agree with my decision.
An exhausting day…
You wouldn’t think that life sans small whiteboards could be so difficult. Amazing how not having something so small and seemingly insignificant could have such a big impact.
Needless to say, by the end of the day, I was SO ready for bed.
Luckily for me, the next day went back to normal – and I never want to experience life without small whiteboards ever again.
